Houston Independent School District , the Asia Society, Houston A+ Challenge and Houston Community College joined together to create Houston Academy for International Studies, which will prepare students for college and develop their international knowledge and understanding of world cultures. The high school is in the Central Region located on the Houston Community College Central campus. This central location provides easy access to Houston’s leading businesses, multicultural attractions, and museums and enables students to participate in HCC college courses while in high school. HAIS emphasizes a personalized learning environment with each student assigned to a staff advisor. In addition to the HISD core curriculum, students will complete a global studies program and at least four years of foreign languages, two service-learning experiences, an internship program, and a senior project concerning international topics. Initial languages offered include Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
School Highlights
Houston Academy for International Studies students outperformed their
district and state, receiving high percentages of passing and commended
performances on our state assessment and better than the national
average on the Stanford 10 assessment. Students also excelled outside
of the classroom: 10 HAIS students participated in study abroad
programs this summer in Italy, Turkey, Spain, Costa Rica, Thailand, and
China.
School Voices
In a small school environment, it felt okay to step outside your
comfort zone, take risks, and grow as a person. Traveling to Spain
this summer was my giant leap and an eye-opening experience. This
experience is so integral to who I am now and who I will become. -Student
