"I don't want to write things that everybody agrees on," says the author of a controversial Mao biography and a revisionist new book on the Empress Dowager Cixi. In-person appearances this month at Asia Society New York and our Texas and Northern California Centers.
"I would have never felt the need to do the work if I already had the answers," says photographer Carolyn Drake, who recently spent six years documenting Central Asia's borders, geography, ethnicities, and tumultuous history.
