Since 2009, ASPI’s Myanmar Initiative has sought to strengthen relations between Myanmar and other countries and to support Myanmar’s transition to democracy. Our initial projects resulted in recommended policy options that would allow the U.S. to advance Myanmar's reform process. Beginning in 2011, ASPI has worked with the U.S. Institute of Peace, the Blue Moon Fund, and the Myanmar Development Resource Institute to convene informal discussions among experts from the U.S. and Myanmar, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Myanmar’s transition to democracy. Asia Society organized a series of seminal meetings in September 2011 that brought together for the first time policymakers from Myanmar, the U.S., and the international community to consider prospects for reform in Myanmar.
