Iran Modern Gala
Asia Society Hosts Benefit Gala in Celebration of the Iran Modern Exhibition Opening
Monday, September 9, 2013
Asia Society Museum, 725 Park Avenue (at 70th Street), New York City
This special gala evening, hosted by Honorary Committee H.E. Shaikha Paula Al Sabah, Mohammed Afkhami, Dr. Farhad Farjam and Shirin Neshat, celebrates the opening of Iran Modern, the first major U.S. museum exhibition to focus on Iranian art created during the three decades leading up to the 1979 revolution. Over five years in the planning, this international loan exhibition features more than 100 works by 26 artists. Paintings, sculpture, works on paper and photography are organized thematically to map the genesis of Iranian modernism.
The evening will feature a special performance by Mohsen Namjoo, with Arash Sobhani and Ardalan Payvar from Kiosk.
Mohsen Namjoo’s musical style is a mosaic of Persian classical poetry of Hafez, Rumi and Saadi with western rock, blues, and jazz influences. Kiosk, pioneers of the underground movement of Iranian rock music, has been praised for their sharp, smart, and satirical lyrics that highlight the paradoxes of Iranian society and politics.
The evening kicks off Iran Modern a season of related art talks, performances, films symposia and more looking at creative expression in Iran during the period covered by the exhibition and today.
Iran Modern is on view to the public through January 5, 2014.
