Twenty years after its demolition, the Kowloon Walled City remains a fascinating architectural and urban phenomenon that continues to captivate architects and designers around the world. Once considered to be the densest place on earth, the Walled City represented an unusual colonial wrinkle in time and space that eventually grew to support a complex array of manufacturing operations, food and textile production, illicit activities, and residential units before its eventual destruction began in 1993.

This roundtable session, which includes a former Kowloon Walled City resident as well as authors of some of the foremost architectural analyses of the site, will focus on the Walled City's history, its unique spatial development, and its legacy for people today.

Speakers:

  • Greg Girard, photographer and co-author, City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City
  • Suenn Ho, Principal Director, SUENN HO DESIGN; author, An Architectural Study on the Kowloon Walled City: Preliminary Findings; Adjunct Professor of Architecture, University of Oregon
