The Yeonghwa Film Club at the Korean Cultural Centre India turns the spotlight on women filmmakers from Korea this month. It opens with a series of films, exploring not just the images of women on-screen but celebrating their presence behind the camera. The selection of films celebrates the complexity of women’s lives, exploding myths and shaking up perceptions about the kinds of stories women tell about themselves. Locating gender in the space of production, the series look at the diverse cinematic languages employed by women film directors from Korea. Seven-year-old Sang Woo is left with his mute grandmother in a remote village while his mother looks for work. Having run away from home at a young age, the mother introduces the two to each other for the first time. Born and raised in the city, Sang-Woo quickly comes into conflict with his old-fashioned grandmother and his new rural surroundings. But through his grandmother's boundless patience and devotion, he learns to embrace empathy, humility and the value of family. Made on a small budget, the film was a surprise hit and became one of the highest grossers of 2002 in Korea.
 
This programme falls under our AsiaLens series which brings together voices from across Asia as they express themselves through the visual and performing arts, presenting a vibrant and nuanced view of modern Asia. Previous events under this series include a discussion on Art and Feminism and a contemporary dance performance by KENTARO!!.
