Party Time: Who Rules China and How

Party Time: Who Rules China and How

On September 4, 2013, Asia Society Australia, together with The Sydney Institute, hosted the international launch of Rowan Callick’s book Party Time: Who Runs China and How.

Mr Callick, The Australian's Asia-Pacific editor and former China correspondent, provides an eye-opening account of one of the world’s most powerful and secretive institutions: the Chinese Communist Party. Drawing upon the experiences of contemporary Party members, Party Time paints a remarkable portrait of the institution’s well-oiled engines and the inner workings of its political elite.

Whilst the Party is no doubt geared towards ongoing economic reforms, there is a distinct lack of interest in political reform. And while individuals in China may live quite independently from the overall influence of party politics, it is quite a different story when it comes to businesses. Mr Callick remarked that for an organisation, as opposed to an individual, to be outside the system means to be outside China.

The launch was generously sponsored by Clayton Utz.
