China's Fourth Plenum: Political Reform in the Xi Jinping Era
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAsiaConnect Briefing with Dr. Dali Yang, Professor, University of Chicago
The Asia Society Policy Institute’s newly released report Avoiding the Blind Alley: China’s Economic Overhaul and Its Global Implications provides in-depth analysis of China's economic reforms since the Third Plenum — and points out the overarching need for governance reforms to make economic reform effective. China’s approach to governance reform became clearer following last week’s Fourth Plenum, which concluded with an announcement of legal and governance reforms focused on the “rule of law” in China.
Our upcoming AsiaConnect briefing will feature political scientist Dali L. Yang commenting on the reforms that emerged from China’s Fourth Plenum. Based on his research, analysis, and regular visits to Beijing, Prof. Yang will discuss his views on the key takeaways from the Fourth Plenum, the implications of these reforms, and how these reforms fit into President Xi’s “Chinese Dream”.
Dali L. Yang is Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago and the founding Faculty Director of the University of Chicago Center in Beijing. Prof. Yang’s current research is focused on the politics of China’s development, particularly risk regulation and governance, and state-society relations. Prof. Yang has previously served in a number of other academic leadership roles. He was Chairman of the Political Science Department, Director of The Center for East Asian Studies, and Director of the Committee on International Relations of the University of Chicago. Professor Yang is a member of the Committee of 100, a member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and a member of the China Committee of the Chicago Sister Cities International Program. He is also on the Advisory Board of the Paulson Institute at the University of Chicago.
