Past Programs

Since its establishment in 1990, the Asia Society Hong Kong Center has become the community's premier forum for public discussion of regional and global affairs. The Hong Kong Center hosts approximately 100 programs each year, covering diverse subjects such as economics and business, political change and development, security and defense, environment and society, culture, and arts of Asia. Programs vary from luncheon discussions and evening events to exhibitions, tours, seminars, and conferences.

Hong Kong Center programs have featured many prominent speakers including: Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, China historian Jonathan Spence, former U.S. President George Bush, Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn, Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command Admiral Tim Keating, AIDS researcher David Ho, MIT Media Lab Director and futurist Nicholas Negroponte, Indonesia President Abdurrahman Wahid, Chairman and CEO of Sony Corporation Nobuyuki Idei, Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, philanthropist George Soros, Nobel Laureate in Economics Amartya Sen, former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim, Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, Nobel Laureate in Economics Robert A. Mundell, and many others.

Membership in the Asia Society Hong Kong Center is open to all who are interested, and includes businesspeople, professionals, diplomats, academics, journalists, and others from Hong Kong and throughout Asia, North and South America, and Europe. Among the benefits to members are reciprocal privileges at other Asia Society regional centers. The Center is supported entirely by membership dues, program fees, and contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
