Mandala Creation Represents the Impermanence of Life
HOUSTON, August 21, 2015 — Asia Society Texas Center received nearly 3,300 visitors to welcome and watch Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery in India create an Akshobhya (the Unshakable Victor for Conflict Resolution and Peace) sand mandala in our galleries as a special exhibition. On Saturday, several hundred guests took part in the creation of a Texas-themed community mandala, trying their hands at the chakpur, the tool monks use to funnel sand onto the mandala. The event received significant press and social media coverage, and many of the visitors were at Asia Society Texas Center for the first time, inspired by having seen the Drepung Loseling monks on the recent season of House of Cards. Hours after completing the mandala, the monks dismantled the mandala, symbolizing the impermanence of life.
