Kevin Kwan Debuts Anticipated Sequel
HOUSTON, June 16, 2015—Houston is no stranger to multi-creative Kevin Kwan. He lived and learned in our great city, having grown up here and attending University of Houston. Two years ago, Kevin visited the Texas Center in support of his wildly successful Crazy Rich Asians, and he joined us again for the launch of the novel’s follow-up, China Rich Girlfriend. Guests who braved the rainy weather to join Kwan's "tropical storm party" were treated to a brief reading by the author from his new novel. Kwan then led the audience through a pictorial journey of old-versus-new China with historical family photos from Singapore juxtaposed with images of China’s modern skylines and even the world’s highest-grossing Apple store in Shanghai. After chatting with Asia Society’s Director of Performing Arts & Culture Evan Wildstein about his creative journey, Kwan signed books and mingledwith guests. When asked about the upcoming movie version of Crazy Rich Asians, ever fun and discreet, he replied mostly, “Soon, maybe” with a wink. (26 min., 43 sec.)
