Creation Station: Modern Persian Puppetry
VIEW EVENT DETAILSThe marionette tradition has a long history in Persian performing arts, dating back to the Qajar Dynasty; however it has arguably gained new life in the last generation with the work of Behrouz Gharibpour. Stories told using his puppets include Davandeh, which narrates a child’s view of 1980s Iran, and the classical opera of Rostam and Sohrab. Inspired by traditional techniques and using modern materials, we will develop hand puppets and marionettes which celebrate Persian culture and provide entertainment for the entire family.
Our inspiration for this month’s event is the Tehran International Puppet Theatre Festival, born in the late 1980s in the Iranian capital. The primary creation will be a playful character often seen during Nowruz, the Persian New Year. The project will have several stations reflecting each step in the crafting of your puppet and storytelling will take place throughout the project time.
