Asia Society Texas Center Second Annual Spotlight Asia
Cocktails and Cultural Fusions with DJ Kalkutta and DJ SUN
HOUSTON, March 2, 2013 — Asia Society Texas Center hosted the second annual Spotlight Asia: Cocktails and Cultural Fusions, this year in collaboration with Zulu Creative and event chairs Divya and Chris Brown, Claire and Rick Thielke, and Janae and Kenny Tsai. With major funding by American First National Bank, the Silk-Road themed event was held at the Yoshio Taniguchi-designed building beautifully decorated and lit by Tom Springer of AJ’s Urban Petals.
Eight hundred guests came out to the evening featuring New York-based turntablist and producer DJ Kalkutta, affectionately referred to as Bollywood Barbie. Her Open Format style blended music across genres from rock to hip hop to electro and everything in between. Houston-based DJ SUN (Soular Grooves) welcomed guests and set the scene with his signature sound, described as warmly nostalgic and space-age cool. With American, Caribbean, Chinese, European, and South American roots, DJ SUN embodied the spirit of the current hapa exhibit.
Boheme, Triniti Restaurant and Bar, and Nosh Bistro offered signature appetizers. In the Detours Lounge, Glen Gondo and Sushic provided sushi while the Texas Sake Company provided sips of the only organic sake traditionally crafted in Texas. Wine, beers, and spirits flowed thanks to sponsorships from Glazier’s and Silver Eagle Distributors. Yelp’s Traders Oasis offered guests a respite from their travels with refreshing herbal teas courtesy of Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Texas Hookah Lounge pipes, and decorative henna body art by The Original Henna Company.
Asia Society Texas Center wishes to acknowledge and thank the evening’s sponsors: American First National Bank, Glen Gondo and Suchic – The Sushi Company, PaperCity Magazine, Yelp, CultureMap, Charming Charlie, MetLife, Smileboth, AJ’s Urban Petals, Boheme, the Finial Group, Glazier’s, Nosh Bistro, Silver Eagle Distributors, Texas Sake Company, Triniti Restaurant and Bar, Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Texas Hookah Lounge, and The Original Henna Company.
