“Asia is no longer exotic – it’s core business.”
Kevin Rudd discusses China’s impact on our global order.
Our current global order faces rapid changes: China is now the world’s second-largest economy, and soon to become the largest and replace the United States after more than 150 years of global economic dominance. Kevin Rudd, President of the Asia Society Policy Institute, and former Prime Minister of Australia addressed a large audience at the University of Zurich with a speech on the rise of China and its impact on our global order. The event hosted by Asia Society Switzerland and the Swiss Institute of International Studies was part of the series «Focus Asia».
Rudd argued that China has no interest in overthrowing the current order. In fact, they will actively participate in global governance and take more international responsibilities. In a speech last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that he views the reform of the multilateral system as a "trend of [the] times.” These are major signs of a new Chinese approach to multilateralism, said Rudd.
