The Asia Society Book Club
VIEW EVENT DETAILS'The Accusation' by Bandi
At our second Asia Society Book Club, we will discuss The Accusation: Forbidden Stories From Inside North Korea published in 2017 by Bandi, a North Korean dissident writer. In 1989, under this pseudonym, Bandi began to write a series of stories about the life under Kim Il Sung’s totalitarian regime. Later these stories were smuggled out of North Korea by a close relative and set for publication in 2017 for the world to read.
The Accusation is an insight on one of the most secretive countries in the world and provides seven selected stories of ordinary men and women facing the daily life in North Korea. Each story is based on a factual situation and the characters range from collective farm laborers to the Pyongyang elite.
According to The Guardian and The New York Times, this book provides an interesting perspective on North Korea and its human rights condition in a time of ongoing crisis.
