New York’s Asia Society and Singapore Tyler Print Institute to publish portfolio by 10 leading artists from across Asia.

The limited edition print portfolio, the first of its kind by the Asia Society, will be published to commemorate the Society’s 50th Anniversary and will be launched in New York in November 2006. Featuring an artwork by each of ten specially selected leading artists, the portfolio is designed to reflect the diverse range of art practices in contemporary art and the Society’s commitment to contemporary art from Asia.

The artists featured were hand-picked by Melissa Chiu, Asia Society’s Museum Director and Curator, Contemporary Art, who is also the portfolio’s curator. “I wanted a selection of leading artists from across Asia as a representation of what’s happening today in contemporary Asian art” says Chiu.

Artists include: Nilima Sheikh (India) b. 1945 known for her modern interpretations of traditional miniature painting. Lin Tian Miao (China) b. 1961 recognised for her installations of domestic tools covered in thread. Amanda Heng ( Singapore) b. 1961 explores values, traditions and gender roles through a variety of media including installation. Wong Hoy Cheong (Malaysia) b. 1960 works in diverse media, challenging what is real and fake. Navin Rawanchaikul (Thailand) b. 1971 best known for his taxi cab installations in cities across the world. Wilson Shieh (Hong Kong) b.1970 presents contemporary Chinese culture using traditional Chinese brush painting techniques. Michael Lin (Taiwan) b. 1964 known for his painted walls and floors that reproduce large scale traditional floral motifs inspired by traditional Taiwanese textiles. Many of the artists have been presented at the Asia Society over the last 10 years.

In the coming 5 months, each artist will spend 10-12 days at the Institute, in a rare opportunity to collaborate closely with STPI’s leading international print and papermaking team. One work from each artist will be selected by the curator for inclusion. The portfolio will consist of ten original handmade prints in an edition of one hundred. The preview of the works created will be in August 2006 at Singapore Tyler Print Institute, followed by the launch of the portfolio in New York in November 2006.
