Understanding 21st Century China: All Under Heaven?
VIEW EVENT DETAILSChina has experienced remarkable changes since economic reforms were implemented in the 1980s and since then, China’s poverty rate has declined from 53% in 1981 to around 8% in 2001. Some analysts have cited reforms in the agricultural sector as an important factor behind the observed trend. It has exhibited double-digit annual economic growth rates in the previous years and in 2011, China has become the second largest economy in the world.
For the past years, it has fostered closer economic ties with other countries in Africa (which received considerable amounts of Chinese FDI) and in the Asia-Pacific region (in which China serves as a final product assembly hub of the regional production chain), therefore, emerging as an important player in regional affairs. However, China is currently facing an array of challenges which include further poverty reduction, rising inequality, and problems associated with rapid urbanization and environmental sustainability. Another issue is the potential slowdown of growth of economic activity in China in the coming years. These have significant implications given the important role that China currently plays in the realm of international economic and political affairs.
