In a rapidly changing, digital world, we will examine the problems and challenges in the Philippine educational system and discuss initiatives and solutions to overcome these issues. Key stakeholders will engage in a casual open dialogue to identify reforms that must be undertaken to ensure that future graduates will have the necessary skills to support the country’s social and economic development.
Asia Society Philippines in partnership with APEC Schools will feature Asia 21 Young Leaders that have various advocacies in the education sector, with special participation by Fred Ayala, Chief Executive Officer of Ayala Education, Inc. Guests can expect to meet, learn from, and collaborate with peers in the education space, or work with professionals in the academia.

Alfredo “Fred” Ayala is the Managing Director and Member of the Management Committee of Ayala Corporation. He is the Chief Executive Officer of LiveIt Investments, Ltd. (LiveIt) and of Ayala Education, Inc. Fred is also leading Ayala Corporation’s push into investing in the private education sector, through newly formed Ayala Education, Inc. (AEI). AEI invests in both K-12 (through APEC or Affordable Private Education Centers, a chain of 24 low cost private high schools and a joint venture with Pearson, and Higher Education (through LINC or Learning with Industry Collaboration, in partnerships with Jose Rizal University, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Arellano University). AEI is focused on delivering high quality, affordable education that can significantly enhance middle and lower income students’ employability, as well as expand the pool of well-trained graduates for the IT-BPO and other service industries.

Natalie Christine "Ching" Jorge, Executive Director, Bato-Balani Foundation
Natalie Christine “Ching’ Virata Jorge is the Executive Director of Bato Balani Foundation Inc, a non-profit foundation engaged in educational programs aimed to uplift the quality of education in the Philippines. She is also the President of Young Public Servants (YPS) an organization that aims to harness a new generation of leaders who support and advocate Democratic Citizenship and Good Governance. With strong development and civil society ties, Ching is currently the Chairperson of the League of Corporate Foundations and a former Board member of the Association of Foundations. She is also the Managing Trustee of the International Center for Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov), a Manila-based policy think-tank that aims to develop and operationalize policy agendas. Ching is an Asia 21 Young Leader, Class of 2009.
Trissa Manalastas-Menardo, Director for Finance, DepEd
Trissa Menardo is currently the Director for Finance of the Department of Education (DepEd). She joined the public sector in 2010 as key technical staff of the Undersecretary for Finance and Administration of DepEd. Her experience as one of the founders of Alay ni Ignacio (ANI), sparked her interest in the education sector. ANI is a student organization in the Ateneo de Manila University that provides summer programs to public secondary students to enable them to pursue higher education. ANI has since become the student arm of Pathways to Higher Education, which has institutionalized mechanisms not only to help students have access to but also to thrive and excel in higher studies and become student leaders. Upon completing her degree in Ateneo, she worked as Development Officer of Synergeia Foundation, a network of local government and non-profit partners working together to reinvent local school boards and empower communities to help children learn reading and math better. Trissa is an Asia 21 Young Leader, Class of 2006.
Henry Motte-Munoz, Founder, Edukasyon.ph
Henry Motte-Muñoz, a Filipino-French citizen, grew up between Europe and the Philippines. After graduating from the London School of Economics, he joined Goldman Sachs' M&A practice in London. His HBS Social Enterprise Institute Summer Fellowship in Manila led him to co-found Bantay.ph, an anti-corruption NGO. Seeing large gaps in the education market, he created Edukasyon.ph in 2014, an online college and career counsellor that is currently piloting in its first market - the Philippines - with plans to expand globally by 2017. The platform is a one-stop shop for universities and students providing information on careers and connect education and employment. Henry was also chosen as one of the Forbes 30 Under 30 for 2016. Henry is an Asia 21 Young Leader, Class of 2015.
Solvie Nubla-Lee, Director, Pathways to Higher Education
Solvie is one of the Founding Members and current Director of Pathways to Higher Education, a 14-year old social involvement program of the Ateneo de Manila University. The program aims to identify and nurture next generation Filipino leaders from the grassroots. The program also serves as a link between talented students, higher education institutions and industry to ensure relevant collaboration that is consistent with the needs of industry and society today. Prior to her involvement in development, she worked in the corporate sector and has since used her experience to establish key alliances with colleges and universities, benefactors, and government. Solvie is an Asia 21 Young Leader, Class of 2011.

Professionals in the education/academia sector, after-school initiatives, CSOs, educational foundations and start-ups, supplemental educational system providers, college/graduate students, publishers, parents.
People can look forward to good food and engaging conversations! The program will be followed by networking and music from our resident DJ.
This program is under the Asia 21 Conversations Series that aims to:
- Highlight the work and advocacies of the Asia 21 Young Leaders of Asia Society, and;
- Provide a platform for professionals and leaders from various sectors to find common interests and explore working together to find solutions to current challenges
