Asia Society Northern California presents a discussion with Hollywood producer, Janet Yang, and San Francisco Opera General Director, Matthew Shivlok on Asian representation and diversity in the arts prior to the performance of Turandot at the SFOpera.
Maestro Luisotti conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in this production by English artist David Hockney, directed by Garnett Bruce. Music by Giacomo Puccini; Libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. (Sung in Italian with English supertitles).
Janet Yang is a prominent Hollywood producer with deep roots in China. Her extensive Film and TV credits include "The Joy Luck Club”, "The People vs. Larry Flynt”, “Dark Matter”, “Shanghai Calling”, and “Documented”.
Yang won both a Golden Globe and Emmy for her HBO film, “Indictment: The McMartin Trial”. She began her career bringing Chinese cinema into North America and brokered the first sale of American studio films into China. She then joined Steven Spielberg on the historic production of “Empire of the Sun”.
Yang has been named one of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Hollywood” by the Hollywood Reporter. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, as well the Executive Committee of its Producers Branch; the Committee of 100; the National Committee on US-China Relations; and the Executive Committee of Asia Society Southern California.
