Amit Chaudhuri: Calcutta: Two Years in the City
VIEW EVENT DETAILSASNC and the Mechanics’ Institute are pleased to host celebrated novelist Amit Chaudhuri, who will talk about his latest work, Calcutta: Two Years in the City, a penetrating memoir of his Indian hometown. He guides us through the city where he was born, the home he loved as a child, the setting of his acclaimed novels—a place he now finds captivating for all the ways it has, and, perhaps more powerfully, has not, changed. Chaudhuri shows us a city relatively untouched by the currents of globalization but possessed of a “self-renewing way of seeing, of inhabiting space, of apprehending life.”
Amit Chaudhuri is Professor of Contemporary Literature at the University of East Anglia in the UK. Calcutta is his newest work and first book of nonfiction. He is also the author of five novels including The Immortals, which was named Best Book of the Year by the New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, and Irish Times.
