Up-and-Coming Asian American Talent
Music, food, and drink showcase Bay Area's new Asian American creatives
On Wednesday, August 28, Asia Society Northern California’s Young Professionals Group hosted Music & Mingle: New Asia + SF, at Runway, a collaborative workspace and incubator in Twitter’s headquarter building. The evening was a chance to showcase Asian America in the Bay Area, and included performances by Ukulenny (covering songs like Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” on the ukulele), Aimee Amparo (a vocalist) and Ron Quesada, who fuses the traditional Filipino instrument, the kulintang, with electronic music to create his own sound called kulintronica. The large crowd enjoyed bites from local food trucks: samosas from KASA Indian eatery and steamed bao buns from The Chairman (the pork belly buns disappeared in record time!). Along with the free-flow beer and wine (donated by Wine Spectator magazine), the YPG created a signature cocktail called the Lemongrass Leo (spiced rum, lemongrass-infused simple syrup, muddled basil, lime and soda water) – those went quickly, too!
