i love this site its filled with many things and i love to explore. it roks. i use this for my social studies project.....yeah!
Peter is right in saying that we should look to learn about our own countries, but to then say "Why the world?" is naive in this global society. I am American and I am appalled at how little so many Americans know about other cultures. And not to know is one thing, but to have no desire to know, to be willfully ignorant, is shameful. I look at shows like The Amazing Race, which takes Americans across the globe as they face different challenges, and the intolerance and ignorance is frightful - and this is from people who KNOW they are going to be encountering different cultures. I can only imagine how people who have no desire to go anywhere or learn anything different from what they already know would respond. If more people would take the time to learn about, accept, and celebrate the differences in cultures besides their own, the less insular people would be and the less hatred there would be. So YES, we SHOULD learn about the world. It is a vibrant exciting place with much to teach.
Why the world? I'd bet that the vast majority of people in the States don't know about their own land.... Learn about YOUR own country first: then look further afield, I think. We have the same here - so many people are not aware of our country... Cheers, Peter, New Zealand.
