Baseball is one of the most popular sports today and there are many stories about the players and their uniforms: Babe Ruth's road jersey from his first season with the New York Yankees (1920), the sole surviving uniform from the infamous 1919 World Series, Joe DiMaggio's rookie uniform from 1936, the Boston Red Sox road uniform Ted Williams wore during his epic 1941 season, Jackie Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers home jersey from the 1952 season, Bill Mazeroski's Pittsburgh Pirates home uniform worn to hit the game-winning home run in game 7 of the 1960 World Series, and many others.
The book Game Worn: Baseball Treasures from the Game's Greatest Heroes and Moments is a visual and literary delight and a veritable treasure trove of baseball memorabilia. Co-author Stephen Wong will introduce some coveted and precious baseball uniforms from 20th century Major League players, including the historically significant jerseys, jackets, hats, and other collectibles that together tell us as much about the history and soul of America as they do about the game and its players. Chosen baseball artifacts will also be displayed in the evening.
Stephen Wong, historian and lifelong collector of rare and historically significant baseball artifacts, is the co-author of Game Worn: Baseball Treasures from the Game's Greatest Heroes and Moments, which was nominated a finalist for the 2016 Casey Award. He also authored the top-selling Smithsonian Baseball: Inside the World's Finest Private Collections, which was nominated a finalist for the 2005 Casey Award. Wong has advised a number of the world's top collectors and has lent his expertise to numerous baseball exhibitions, including those at the Chicago Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, and the Skirball Cultural Center. A graduate of Stanford Law School, Wong is currently a managing director and chairman of Hong Kong investment banking at Goldman Sachs.
