In this presentation Jim DeMint, President of the think tank, The Heritage Foundation, will discuss current policy issues facing the US Congress, and what progress might be made during this election year. These issues will include the prospects for tax reform, how to control government spending and debt, the prospects for free trade agreements, and the future course of various social welfare programs in the United States.
Jim DeMint, President of The Heritage Foundation, succeeds Edwin J. Feulner who had been president since 1977. He is a former United States Senator for South Carolina and was the leading conservative voice within the Senate. He resigned from the Senate in 2013, to assume the presidency of The Heritage Foundation. After obtaining undergraduate degrees in communications and business administration, Senator DeMint worked for a decade in the research, advertising and marketing business. He then founded the DeMint Group, a Greenville-based marketing research and strategic planning business, running it until 1998, when he was elected as a Republican to the first of three terms in the US House of Representatives. His reputation as one of Washington’s most principled conservative leaders grew after his election to the US Senate in 2004, and continued to advocate limited government, individual liberty, a strong national defense and traditional values. His latest book, “Falling in Love with America Again” (2014) debuted at number one on The Washington Post bestseller list.
