Western China: China's Real Estate Frontier ' The Development of Chongqing
VIEW EVENT DETAILSChina's market reforms and rapid modernization have produced world-class mega-cities across its eastern coastal regions while generating problems such as massive migration, skyrocketing housing prices, shortage of resources and intense labor competition with associated inflation. The country is now ten years into a major "Go West" campaign to redirect urban growth away from the coastal metropolises towards the less developed and still impoverished western areas. This effort has entailed massive infrastructure development and business investments on the western frontier. Its positive effects as well as its challenges are evident in the region's largest cities, such as Chongqing, which has become a principal economic, governmental, and cultural center of western China.
A major player in Chinese real estate development is Shui On Land, whose many projects, such as Xintiandi in Shanghai, have radically altered China's urban landscapes. Shui On is now actively engaged in Chongqing and working closely with local officials.
Please join moderator Gordon Chang, writer at Forbes.com, in a conversation with Albert Chan, Director of Development Planning and Design at Shui On Group, Qiu Shujie, Vice Chief Architect of Chongqing Urban Planning Bureau, and Mahadev Raman, Principal and Board Director at Arup. They will discuss Chongqing's growth and its implications for further Chinese urbanization.
