Tiananmen to Pyongyang, Kabul to Baghdad: A Reporter's Inspiring Journey
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAsia: Beyond the Headlines
NEW YORK, February 1, 2018 — ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff discusses his work covering major stories in Asia with his former colleague, Asia Society Executive Vice President Tom Nagorski. Bob's wife Lee Woodruff joined them for part of the conversation. (1 hr., 22 min.)
Ten years ago, ABC News anchor Bob Woodruff appeared to have it all: a wife and four children, a top job at a major news organization, and a passport to cover the world’s most important stories. Then, in January 2006, the armored vehicle he was in was struck by a roadside bomb. He nearly died that day.
It was, of course, a life-altering moment. But long before that moment — and in the decade since — his journey has been marked by distinguished journalism across Asia. Nearly three decades ago, as a Mandarin-speaking would-be lawyer in China, he served as a translator for CBS News correspondent Bob Simon during the crackdown on Tiananmen Square. He would return to China as a foreign correspondent and was later among the first reporters to enter Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001, attacks as well as among the first to report from Iraq after the U.S. invasion in 2003. He has traveled eight times to North Korea — including a trip made earlier this year — and has made three trips to Rakhine State and the border areas between Bangladesh and Myanmar to cover the plight of the Rohingya.
Join us for a special program with Bob Woodruff — a conversation about Asia, about the many issues he has covered on the continent, and about the remarkable and inspiring personal journey he has made since that awful day, more than a decade ago. Lee Woodruff will join for part of the conversation.
Tom Nagorski (moderator) is Executive Vice President of Asia Society. He joined the Asia Society following a three-decade career in journalism — having served most recently as Managing Editor for International Coverage at ABC News.
