Ticking Time Bomb? Finding a Resolution to the South China Sea Dispute
VIEW EVENT DETAILSAsia: Beyond the Headlines — South China Sea Conference, Opening Dinner Reception and Program
Complete Conference Overview (including complete videos)
Please note: This event is by invitation only
Territorial disputes with respect to the South China Sea have existed for more than a century, but in recent years Asia’s booming economies have become hungrier for already scarce resources. In order to maintain their growth trajectories, countries in the region — primarily Southeast Asian states and China — are asserting their sovereignty over the sea’s energy-rich waters. The dispute is exacerbated by the U.S. pivot to Asia, and the relevance of the area to America’s interests, particularly its importance for regional trade and commerce, fisheries, and energy. How can the direct claimants, as well as their allies and neighbors, find a way forward in resolving the dispute? An expert panel at Asia Society endeavors to provide answers.
Please join Asia Society for an expert discussion, the flagship event of a two-day conference examining the territorial dispute in greater depth. The opening evening program will feature an address by Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy, titled “Dangerous Currents in the South China Sea,” followed by conversation with scholars working directly on this issue.
