They rap using literary poems, wishes and curses, and other items from ancient texts in Javanese. They are the Jogja Hip Hop Foundation (JHF) ' the foremost Javanese hip hop group, featuring some of the most stellar artists from Indonesia. Performing alongside local hip hop artists, the group creates a unique musical dialogue as they meld global rhythms, traditional gamelan music and a love of Javanese language into a new form.
According to its founder, Moh Zuki (AKA Kill the DJ), JHF was established to promote diversity and pluralism. The group takes traditional Javanese literature ' classic epics such as Centhini and Gathalco ' and reinterprets it for a new audience, reinvigorating an interest in the country's rich past. In other instances JHF has successfully merged these ancient texts with Islamic teachings to exemplify the spirit of syncretism and plurality. On a more national scale, the group has experimented with other Indonesian languages to create songs about anti-corruption ' now widely used in public demonstrations and rallies.
