U.S. Defense Secretary Visits Afghanistan
“U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Kabul on an unannounced visit to gauge the latest situation in the aftermath of significant NATO gains in recent weeks. Though he cautioned senior U.S. military officials about the next stage of counterinsurgency operations, he appreciated the successes of the Marjah operation. The real test for NATO as well as Afghanistan's political leadership will be in Kandahar, however, for which both NATO and Afghan security forces are preparing. In comparison to Marjah, Kandahar is a large area where insurgents are in a stronger position and tough resistance from them is expected,” says Asia Society Bernard Schwartz Fellow Hassan Abbas.
“In an interesting development, Secretary Gates also warned Iran in strong words, alleging that Iran on one hand is supportive of the Afghan government but has simultaneously been supportive of some militant factions in Afghanistan as well. Iranian President Ahmadinejad is also expected to visit Kabul later on Monday.
“It is believed that Secretary Gates might be in Afghanistan to review the situation vis-a-vis negotiations with reconcilable elements of Taliban. After the arrest of some leading members of the Afghan Taliban by Pakistani security forces in Karachi in recent weeks, Taliban are under stress and possibly under increased pressure to come to the negotiation table.”
