Sri Lanka Holds First Post-War Election
"As Sri Lanka emerges from its first post-war national election with President Rajapaksa having won with a large margin, there are two issues in particular that are of much importance. First is the need to revive discussions towards a political solution for the grievances and aspirations of all minorities, which historically in Sri Lanka has meant substantial devolution of power to the regions. Second is the need for a process of demilitarization including reducing the size of the military, repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act and lifting the state of emergency. Such concerns can only be addressed if the political acrimony between the president and the opposition is brought down, even as Sri Lanka gears up for the parliamentary election due by April,” says Asia Society Associate Fellow Ahilan Kadirgamar.
Ahilan, who was in Sri Lanka for last week’s vote, is based in New York. To arrange an interview, please contact the Asia Society communications department at 212-327-9271 or [email protected].
