Seeking Nuclear Security in South Asia
“The prime ministers of India and Pakistan met President Obama in Washington on the eve of Nuclear Security Summit. Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's team afterwards informed media that Obama happily accepted his invitation to visit Pakistan while mentioning that he has fond memories of visiting Pakistan during his college days. However, according to media reports, Obama also conveyed his concerns about expansion of Pakistan's nuclear program. At a time when Obama is spearheading efforts to secure nuclear materials globally, Pakistan's cooperation in this regard is deemed vital. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's meeting with Obama also focused on security challenges in South Asia and an overview of developments in Afghanistan. It was expected that availing the opportunity, the Indian and Pakistani leaders will also meet but so far no official meeting is scheduled which doesn't bode well for the peace process underway in South Asia,” says Asia Society Bernard Schwartz Fellow Hassan Abbas.
