Koreas Tensions Loom Large in New Year
“Happy New Year on the Korean Peninsula? Following a very difficult year in relations between the North and South, both countries issued statements expressing hope for greater dialogue and cooperation. At the same time, the U.S. special envoy for North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, is headed to the region this week for consultations with counterparts in Korea, Japan, and China,” says Michael Kulma, Asia Society’s Director of Policy Initiatives. “With China’s President Hu Jintao set to visit the United States in a just a few weeks, and with the Chinese focus on positive outcomes for such meetings, can he bring the North Koreans back to the table under conditions agreeable to the U.S. and South Korea? While optimism is in short supply, we'll know soon enough.”
