Koreas Tensions Further Isolate Pyongyang
“The tension dial on the Korean Peninsula was turned another notch higher today as North Korea warned of a new nuclear deterrent in the face of what it sees as increased threats from the United States,” says Michael Kulma, Asia Society’s Director of Policy Initiatives. “This comes on the heels of the G-20 meeting over the weekend, where the G-8 condemned the sinking of the Cheonan, and President Obama spoke out against China's refusal to act on North Korea's dangerous behavior. Also over the weekend, the Obama administration moved to further strengthen its relations with South Korea, announcing that it would continue to control all military forces in the South during any conflict with North Korea, and also suggesting that he would seek ratification of the long-stalled free trade agreement with the South. All of these activities move to further isolate North Korea and adds to concerns for peace and stability in the region.”
