Fallout in Taiwan From China Trade Deal
“The debate in Taiwan continues to rage over the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) signed recently by China and Taiwan,” says Michael Kulma, Asia Society’s Director of Policy Initiatives, who has just returned from a trip to Taiwan.
“Late last week, as discussion opened in Taiwan's legislature about the agreement, fights broke out on Thursday, and the main opposition party walked out on Friday. While the ruling KMT will be able to push it through the legislature due to superior numbers, concerns will continue to fester about the nature of the negotiations and the long-term impact on Taiwan's economy and relationship with the mainland. ECFA will continue to be a significant issue looking forward and will have a significant role to play in Taiwan's major mayoral elections later this year.”
