Churches in Malaysia Attacked
Nine churches in Malaysia have been attacked amid rising religious tensions in the majority-Muslim country, over the use of the word “Allah” by Christians. “The firebombing of churches in Malaysia reveals social tensions that have been growing for some time,” says Asia Society Associate Fellow Simon Tay. “While Prime Minister Najib and the government have condemned the violence, ongoing party politics between the ruling coalition and the opposition has re-emphasized differences of religion and race.”
Simon is in Singapore. To arrange an interview, please contact the Asia Society communications department at 212-327-9271 or [email protected].
