& Best Practices Survey Results

New York, June 5, 2012 – Asia Society’s fourth annual Diversity Leadership Forum will take place Monday, June 11, 2012,in New York. The Forum provides a vital platform for businesses to discuss current corporate diversity issues facing Asian professionals and global market factors impacting businesses today.
In addition to the plenaries and workshops that will explore various aspects of the Asian Pacific American (APA) workplace experience, Asia Society will also unveil the latest findings from its third annual Asian Pacific Americans Corporate Survey. The survey of employees from Fortune 500 and other large companies exclusively measures the corporate success of Asian Pacific Americans and explores how companies can create a supportive workplace that is conducive to growth of both their business and their employees’ leadership capabilities.
This year’s key findings include
- Although 83% of Asian Pacific Americans (APA) employees care about the future of their companies, only 49% feel they truly belong.
- APA engagement is influenced not only by time spent in the U.S., but also by having an American identity, with those who have more American identity (as indicated by scores of those who arrived in the U.S. as children) feeling less engaged than counterparts who arrived later in life.
Vishakha N. Desai, President of Asia Society, says “The experience of Asian Pacific Americans in the workplace is largely a missing piece in corporate diversity discussions. The survey data continues to shed light on this group and provides recommendations that would further improve APA engagement and those of diverse employees overall.”
Based on scores from the survey and responses from diversity departments at the companies, Asia Society recognizes best employers in six categories:
· Overall Best Employer for Asian Pacific Americans
· Best Company for Asia Pacific Americans to Develop Workforce Skills
· Best Company in Promoting Asian Pacific Americans into Senior Leadership Positions
· Best Company for Support of the Asian Pacific American Community
· Best Company with the Most Innovative Practices
· Best Company for Mentoring
