Who's Who at Asia Society
Dr. Hong-Koo Lee, a former Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United States, has a distinguished career in academia, government, and politics. From 1994 to 1995, he served as Prime Minister of Korea under President Kim Young Sam’s government. Until his posting in Washington in 1998, he served as Chairman of the then-ruling New Korea Party and a member of the Korean National Assembly. Prior to 1994, his government service included appointments as Minister of National Unification in 1988 and Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1991 to 1993.
Before entering government service, Dr. Lee had a distinguished career in academia, as Professor of Political Science at Emory University in 1963, Case Western Reserve University from 1964 to 1967, and Seoul National University from 1968 to 1988. He also served as President of the Korean Political Science Association from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Lee was a member of the Commission on Global Governance which proposed a reform of the United Nations system in 1995. He was also Chairman of the World Cup Bidding Committee which had successfully won the right to host the World Cup 2002 in Japan and Korea. Dr. Lee is a graduate of Emory University and received his Doctorate in Political Science from Yale University. He also studied at Seoul National University’s College of Law.
Mr. Dong-Bin Shin was appointed Chairman of Lotte Group Korea in February 2011. Mr. Shin joined the Lotte Group in 1988 after spending six years as executive director for institutional research and sales in the London office of Nomura International Ltd. Mr. Shin is presently Vice Chairman of the Korea-Japan Economic Association, Vice Chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries, board member of the Asia Business Council and Asia Society, and Chair of the Asia Society Korea Center. He also served as the Chairman of the Visit Korea Committee (2010-2012).
Mr. Shin is co-author of the Korean-language volume Learning Retail Leads You To Be CEO, which aims to share with Korean distributors his experience as chief executive officer of Korea-Seven, the first 7-Eleven in Korea. Mr. Shin earned an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1981 after completing a undergraduate business program at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan. He has been honored with a number of prestigious awards, among them the Order of Civil Merit of Moran by the President of the Republic of Korea in 2005, Knight (First Class) of the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 2006, and the Legion d’Honneur, Officier from the President of France in 2007.
Mr. Ronnie C. Chan is the Chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary, Hang Lung Properties Limited. Both are publicly listed companies in Hong Kong, dealing in real estate investment, development, and management. Founded in 1960, the Hang Lung Group expanded its reach into mainland China in 1992. Following successes in Shanghai, from 2005 to 2009 Hang Lung has been investing US$5 billion and building commercial complexes in several Chinese cities, including Tianjin, Shenyang, Jinan, Wuxi, and Dalian. Mr. Chan also co-founded the privately held Morningside group which, in the past two decades, has owned and managed businesses in manufacturing, public transport operations, outdoor advertising, media, healthcare, online game operators, high-tech and biotech investments, developmental capital investments, and other venture capital investments around the world.
Mr. Chan is actively involved with many non-profits, philanthropic endeavors, and educational organizations. He is a former government appointed non-executive Director of The Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong, the founding Chairman Emeritus of the Asia Business Council, and a former Chairman of the Hong Kong-United States Business Council. Additionally, Mr. Chan is a co-chair of the Board of Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, a founding Trustee of the African-Asian Society and a Director of the Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Committee on United States-China Relations, the Committee of 100, and the Advisory Board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta. Mr. Chan is a former director of Standard Chartered PLC and Motorola, Inc. He is also a former member of the governing boards of the World Economic Forum, East-West Center, Pacific Council on International Policy, Eisenhower Fellowships, and The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.
Ms. Josette Sheeran is former Vice Chair of the World Economic Forum, which hosts the annual Davos and Davos in China gathering of world leaders. In this position, she helped advance global initiatives and global, regional, and industry agendas such as Grow Africa, which has attracted $4 billion in investment commitments to end hunger and malnutrition in Africa. She recently served at the Harvard Kennedy School as a Fisher Fellow in the Future of Diplomacy.
Prior to her tenure at the World Economic Forum, Ms. Sheeran was executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), appointed by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2006. There she was responsible for managing the world's largest humanitarian organization, leading a team of 13,000 people in more than 70 countries, and managing an annual budget of more than $3 billion — including $1 billion in Asia.
Ms. Sheeran has held senior positions in the U.S. government, and in those positions she conducted high-level diplomacy with virtually every nation in Asia. As U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs, she led new State Department initiatives which supported economic transformation and reconstruction in Afghanistan and Central Asia and with APEC and ASEAN. Earlier she served for five years as deputy U.S. trade representative, conducting negotiations across Asia, including with China, Australia, Singapore, India, Korea, and Japan.
In 2011, Forbes named her the world's 30th most powerful woman; Foreign Policy has listed her among its top 100 women on Twitter; and her TED Talk on ending world hunger has been viewed more than one million times.
