Kevin Rudd Previews the 2016 G20 Summit in China
CCTV-America Interview
On September 1, 2016, ASPI President Kevin Rudd appeared on the CCTV-America show, The Heat, to discuss the upcoming G20 annual summit taking place in Hangzhou, China. This year marks the first time that China is hosting the meetings.
Rudd discussed the agenda for the summit and the meaning of China's theme for this year's summit: "towards an innovative, invigorated, interconnected, and inclusive world economy." He emphasized that China has been working hard on the innovation front, focusing on "scientific innovation and technological develoment." He also stressed that China is especially interested in inclusive growth to ensure that the common public benefits from economic globalization and that developing nations do not lose out.
Pointing to slow economic growth around the world, Rudd argued that "the principal item on the agenda in the minds of heads of government will be how do we go about restoring long-term, sustainabile, balanced economic growth to the world." He highlighted three mechanisms that can help drive future economic growth: trade, infrastructure investment, and green finance. "Unplugging the arteries of global trade by getting the Doha round done and advancing other free trade agrements around the world, I think is core business," he said.
