The Xi Jinping Ascendancy
MUMBAI, 27 May 2015 - Asia Society India Centre in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation and the Australian Consulate General Mumbai welcomed Rowan Callick, Asia Pacific Editor for The Australian and author of Party Time: Who Runs China and How, for a comprehensive conversation on the Xi Jinping ascendancy, the implications for China, and Chinese political structures.
The evening started with opening comments by the Australian Consul General to India, Mark Pierce, and was followed by remarks by Callick who spoke about Xi Jinping as the “reboot” man encouraging anti-corruption and anti-pollution campaigns, making the party a “clean party” - much needed in China. Callick praised Xi Jinping as a courageous man who reached the top because “he knows how to get things over the goal line,” and affirms he is the strongest party leader China has seen since Mao Zedong. Concerns and solutions on subjects such as: cyber security, economic reform, international and domestic policy are directly addressed under Xi Jinping; having created a system that allows these matters to bypass the central government.
At the APEX Summit in November 2014 Xi Jinping spoke about the Chinese Dream that has now become the Asian Dream. China is keen to work with its neighbors and is confident everyone will benefit in terms of development, economic power, and tolerance. Callick wrapped up in the discussion by highlighting how strong economic integration with India would be beneficial to China and India alike in terms of investment, and fostering a culture of entrepreneurship.
