Members Only: Special Screening of 'Spear'
VIEW EVENT DETAILSJoin Asia Society India Centre in association with the Australian Consulate General, Mumbai for a screening of the award winning film, Spear.
About Spear: Spear is a contemporary Indigenous Australian story, told primarily through gesture and dance, of a young man Djali as he journeys through his community to understand what it means to be a man with ancient traditions in a modern world. Despite the fragmentation of Indigenous cultures, it is in the complex interconnection between places that Djali will ultimately discover his own power — a power linking past, present, and future. Spanning from the outback of Australia to the gritty city streets of Sydney, Spear is a poignant reflection of the continuing cultural connection of Indigenous people.
Spear is directed by Stephen Page, Artisitc Director, Bangarra Dance Theatre. Page is a descendant of the Nunukul people and the Munaldjali clan of the Yugambeh Nation from South East Queensland. He has developed a signature body of works that have become milestones in Australian performing arts. Stephen continues to reinvent Indigenous story-telling both within Bangarra and through collaborations with other performing arts companies, most notably directing the Indigenous sections for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
