Asia Society Organises: SPECIAL WEEKEND AT THE SHARJAH BIENNIAL 11
VIEW EVENT DETAILSJoin Asia Society India Centre for a spectacular weekend visit to the Sharjah Biennial 11. The Biennial, a mega-exhibition that takes place every two years, is titled Re:emerge—Towards a New Cultural Cartography, and special events are planned for our visitors through the day. Curator Yuko Hasegawa has selected the work of approximately 100 artists, architects, designers and performers for this Biennial, choosing "artworks that reassess the Westerncentrism of knowledge in modern times." Starting from the metaphor of the courtyard in Islamic architecture, her project focuses on exploring the complexity and diversity of cultures, societies and politics. The exhibition features work by Indian artists Amar Kanwar, Raqs Media Collective, Studio Mumbai, and CAMP; and foreign artists Francis Alÿs, Matthew Barney, Olafur Eliasson, Yang Fudong, Ernesto Neto, Elizabeth Peyton, Anri Sala, and Wael Shawky (see image above), among many others.
Highlights of the Sharjah weekend programme include an introduction to the Biennial by Curator Yuko Hasegawa, a concert by acclaimed Japanese sound artist Ryoji Ikeda, a performance by Lebanese musician Charbel Haber, and a dinner hosted by Sharjah Art Foundation President and Director, H. E. Sheikha Hoor Al-Qasimi. Additional attractions include a visit to the Sharjah Art Museum, a boat trip to Al Qasba, tours of Maraya and Barjeel, as well as film screenings and special dinners. For shoppers in the group, an optional trip to the famed Mall of the Emirates in Dubai is built into the itinerary.
