Presentation on Japan’s Demographic Shift
HONG KONG, 15th July 2015 – The dramatic demographic transition in Japan has been a much-debated topic as it is changing faster than any other countries during war or plague. The country’s current economic, educational, political and social system are all undergoing rapid shifts to catch up the pace of its demographic change.
A luncheon presentation focusing on lessons learnt from Japan’s Demographic Shift was held in Asia Society Hong Kong Center by Roger Goodman, Nissan Professor of modern Japanese studies, University of Oxford and Chair of UK Academy of Social Sciences. By comparing statistics of population, employment, migration, education policy and other social aspects in various Asian countries, the presentation shed light on the impacts and implications of the Japanese experience to its East Asian neighbors.
The presentation was a full house event. During the Q&A sessions, audiences expressed concerns on Japan’s demographic transition as well as its societal impacts.
