Performance: A[ndalu]sia - Flamenco ReOriented
A 'concert without borders' by ReOrientate
HONG KONG, October 19, 2012 — Asia Society Hong Kong Center's stage became the launching pad for a journey weaving together harmonies from humanity's diverse heritages when ReOrientate, a new Hong Kong-based collective, introduced the audience here to its its accessible, modern re-imagining of complex flamenco forms.
Drawing upon musical traditions with Taoist, Sufi, Hindu, and Buddhist roots as well as modern dance pop, ReOrientate is immediately familiar yet defies categorization. The group hearkens back to the spirit of the Spanish flamenco gypsies' original roots near present-day north India, between western China and eastern Pakistan, where their epic migration began along the Silk Road, then both the European and African sides of the Mediterranean.
