Curated by Yeewan Koon, It Begins with Metamorphosis: Xu Bing is the first major solo exhibition in Hong Kong featuring some of the latest works by this renowned artist. It will highlight how metamorphosis marks the beginnings of the process of ideas and methods, and provides a focused look at Xu Bing’s art. Often using unexpected materials including tobacco leaves, debris, and silkworms, Xu Bing mediates on the transformative power of materiality as he challenges societal values, and explores the shape of memories, histories, and destinies.

Family Workshops

Language: English and Cantonese

Hosted on weekends throughout the exhibition period, the Family Workshops aim to engage families in activities that foster a deeper understanding of Chinese art. Each family workshop will begin with an interactive gallery tour led by experienced museum educators, followed by creative, hands-on activities for children to explore the gallery and exhibition with their parents or caregivers. Designed for families with children aged 3 to 12 and led by experienced museum educators, family workshops are crafted as an opportunity for quality family time, encouraging dialogues in families and nurture creativity in children and adults alike.

My Mini Background Story (Suitable for kids aged 3-6 years old )

This family workshop will focus on the site-specific artwork Xu Bing created for his current exhibition on show at Asia Society Hong Kong Center- Background Story. Xu Bing deconstructed and transformed a classical Chinese landscape painting with light and discarded materials such as tree twigs, dried leaves, and torn paper. Join our My Mini Background Story family workshop, and learn how you may also create your mini version of the artwork at home with your children!

August 17, 2014 (Sunday), 2:00 - 4:30 pm (English) [FULL HOUSE]

Un-readable Family Secret Letters (Suitable for kids aged 6-12 years old)

Many of Xu Bing’s works in the exhibition draw upon the calligraphic principle of using words as art and express his fascination with language. This workshop is designed in accordance to Xu Bing’s creative treatment to languages.

The workshop will begin with an interactive gallery tour led by experienced museum educators. Afterwards, participants will work together to develop their own secret family language referencing Xu Bing’s Square Word Calligraphy, The Character of Characters and Book from the Ground. Each family will write a family letter using the secret family language, creating “un-readable” family letters that are unique and comprehensible only within each family.

6-12 years old: August 31, 2014 (Sunday), 2:00 - 4:30 pm (Cantonese) [REGISTRATION OPEN SOON]

*Limited space for each workshop, please register beforehand.
