Advances in technology mean that it’s possible to ‘listen’ to the fabric of a city for the first time. This is being enabled by two technology developments. The first of these is the development of small sensors that can be integrated into buildings, pipes and almost anything, enabling the ‘unseen’ to become seen. The second technology allows these sensors to send the information via new wireless networks. The resulting data from networked sensors creates an explosion of information which is referred to as ‘Big Data’, and can be analyzed to discern valuable new insights. The combination of these technologies is creating new businesses, enabling new ways of managing infrastructure and new methods for cities to manage scarce resources. In this presentation, Roger Dennis - who works in the continuum between foresight, strategy and innovation - will present what this means for business, cities and the implications for city-dwellers.
Roger Dennis has been heavily involved in some of the world’s largest foresight programs. Among other things he has worked alongside the GameChanger team with senior leaders at Shell in The Hague, and helped establish Future Agenda, which is the world’s largest futures program (www.futureagenda.org). Mr. Dennis regularly advises on strategic innovation and presents to leadership teams around the world. He led the Sensing City project in Christchurch, New Zealand, an initiative that received coverage around the world in many publications including the Financial Times and Scientific American. Last year he presented on data, cities and climate change at the 4th Nobel Laureates Symposium on Global Sustainability in Hong Kong.
