Novelists Maggie Tiojakin from Jakarta and Xu Xi who lives between New York and Hong Kong will discuss the challenges for writers whose work articulates globalization. Their conversation will explore what engages their attention for their own writing, as well as what the transnational novel contributes to contemporary literature. They will also touch on what it means to be a transnational from Asia.
Maggie Tiojakin is an Indonesian novelist and short story writer and author of the story collection Ching-Ching’s Balad and Other Balads and a new novel Grace (Penguin, 2017). She writes in both English and Indonesian and is also a translator, journalist and creative writing instructor. She edits The Jakarta Post’s literature section and is the Managing Director of its Writing Center.
Xu Xi (許素細) is author of eleven books, most recently the novel That Man In Our Lives (C&R Press, 2016) and Interruptions (Hong Kong University Museum & Art Gallery/Columbia Univ. Press, 2016-17), a collaborative ekphrastic essay collection in conversation with photography by David Clarke. Forthcoming books include a memoir Elegy for HK (Penguin, July 1, 2017) and Insignificance: Stories of Hong Kong (Signal 8 Press, 2018). She is co-founder, with Robin Hemley, of Authors at Large offering international writing retreats and workshops. An Indonesian-Chinese Hong Kong native and U.S. citizen, she currently lives between New York and Hong Kong.
