Theater: Dance like a Man
Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man revolves around the lives of the husband-wife duo Jairaj & Ratna, two Bharatnatyam dancers past their prime and is essentially about the complex web of human emotions. Well-known actress (of Monsoon Wedding, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel fame, amongst others) Lillete Dubey's direction makes a powerful story about a man trapped by circumstances and a woman caught between ambition and family, even more vivid.
Mahesh Dattani is one of India’s foremost theater personalities. Although Mahesh is multi-talented and involved in every aspect of theater – acting, directing and writing -- it is in writing that he has found his true calling. He is the only English playwright to be awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award. His plays address social issues linked to deep-rooted prejudices such as gender identity, gender discrimination and communal tensions. His other impressive work includes Final Solutions, Night Queen, Tara and Thirty Days. Dance like a Man has now done 110 successful shows around the world and remains India’s longest-running English play.
