“When will the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) collapse?” is one of the most frequently asked questions since the pro-democracy movement in 1989. Despite the speculation, the CCP has become the largest political party in the world, with more than 80 million members. While it is legitimate to ask whether the CCP will collapse since the party is facing mounting problems, it is more important and more meaningful to ask why the party has survived and continues to develop. What is the CCP’s capability to learn, adapt and change? How has the CCP reinvented itself according to changing environments? How has China’s political system reinvented itself over the years? What are drastic changes that have happened since President Xi Jinping came to power in 2012? How will President Xi’s reform affect the future of China? Will his great experiment succeed? Join Prof. Zheng Yongnian of the National University of Singapore on the implications of Xi’s reform for the future of China.
Prof. Zheng Yongnian is Director of the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore. He was founding Research Director of the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham in the UK. Prof. Zheng has served as consultant to the United Nation Development Programme on China's rural development and democracy, and advises the Chinese government at different levels on various areas of reform and development. He is also author of numerous books on China's domestic transformation and its external relations, including “Contemporary China” and “The Chinese Communist Party as Organizational Emperor”.
