About This Workshop:
Seals are often used in Chinese calligraphy works and Chinese paintings since the ancient times. Owners or collectors of paintings and artworks will often add their personal or studio seals to pieces they have collected. This practice is an act of appreciation towards the work and a verification of the ownership.
Fang Zhaoling, who had a deep appreciation of seals, owned a series of seal collection carved by different seal masters. Besides using seals to verify her works, she would often incorporate the seal as part of her paintings.
This open workshop gives a unique opportunity for participants to personalize their very own seal using rubber foam and wood block for you to incorporate in your artworks!
About This Series:
The history of modern Chinese art has been dominated by the study of male artists. To turn the attention towards female artists from 20th century China, Asia Society Hong Kong Center proudly presents The Hong Kong Jockey Club Presents — Painting Her Way: The Ink Art of Fang Zhaoling, featuring artworks by the innovative painter Fang Zhaoling. As an artist, Fang was remarkable in her perseverance, in her unwavering lifelong pursuit of her art, and in her ultimate artistic success. Her art is rooted in her Chinese heritage.
Open Studio is a space where artists of all ages can create, share and connect through art. Throughout three Sundays within the exhibition period, from 11am to 6pm, the Lippo Amphitheater at our Center will turn into a venue for participants of all ages to create their own artworks to respond to the exhibition and the artist herself. All art materials will be supplied and educators will be present at the venue to provide assistance. Participants are welcome to share their finished artworks on social media using the hashtag #ASHKFangZhaoling and #PaintingHerWay.
