As the September summit between US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping approaches, the bilateral relationship has reached a critical turning point. Nearly four decades after the normalization of relations between the two countries, new realities in China, the United States and the international community are changing the way Americans and Chinese view their bilateral relationship. As the relationship has matured, the stakes for a cooperative and constructive US-China relationship have never been higher. Dr. Evan Medeiros, who until this summer served nearly 6 years as a key advisor on Asia in the White House National Security Council, including two years as the Senior Director and Special Assistant to the President for Asian Affairs, will discuss these new realities in the US-China relationship, and share insights from his experience coordinating China policy in the National Security Council and advising President Obama on Asia policy. He will also speak on US expectations and objectives for the upcoming summit between Presidents Obama and Xi in Washington.
Evan Medeiros stepped down in June as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Asian Affairs at the White House’s National Security Council (NSC). As President Obama’s top advisor on the Asia‐Pacific, he was responsible for coordinating US policy toward the region across the areas of diplomacy, defense policy, economic policy and intelligence affairs. He joined the NSC in 2009 as Director for China, Taiwan and Mongolian Affairs, and was actively involved in US‐China relations, developing the initial proposal for the Sunnyland’s Summit, planning the President’s successful summit with Xi Jinping in 2014, and numerous other high‐level US‐China interactions. Prior to that, Dr. Medeiros was a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation and Senior Research Associate at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He is the author of several books and journal articles including “China’s International Behavior: Activism, Opportunism and Diversification”. Dr. Medeiros received his B.A. from Bates College, Maine, M.A. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, M.Phil from the University of Cambridge (Fulbright Scholar), and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
